Belgium: Today, the first 44 asylum seekers will arrive at Parelstrand in Lommel, where a temporary asylum center will be set up until the end of 2022. Fedasil has a major shortage of reception places. The bungalow park will be able to accommodate 750 people from January.
The decision to use the bungalow park again for the reception of asylum seekers had been in the air for a while, but now it has gone quickly. Mieke Candaele of Fedasil:
“We have an agreement with the owner of the site. We will receive 350 people there until the end of this year. From January we will increase that number to 750 residents until the end of December 2022.”
This morning the local residents received a flyer in the letterbox about the arrival of the asylum seekers. “It all happened quickly because we only signed the agreement with the owner of the park last weekend.”
Reception network is full
The government has too few places to accommodate asylum seekers. “Our reception network is full. Over the past few weeks, we had to refuse a lot of newcomers to the application center in Brussels because there was no more room,” says Candaele. “Now we hope to get some more breathing room with the reopening of Lommel so that we can give everyone a bed with winter approaching.”
“We will show that we are a hospitable congregation “Mayor Bob Nijs
Incidentally, it is already the third time that the operator has rented out part of the park to the Oostappen group for the reception of asylum seekers. The first time was in 2016, the next from 2018 to 2020. Tomorrow the city council will meet to ensure that the reception runs as smoothly as possible. Mayor Bob Nijs (CD&V): “We have learned from previous times that an asylum center does entail some problems. We are not the organizer, but we will show that we as a community are a hospitable municipality and that we will do everything we can to facilitate this as best as possible.”
